This last one is what we want to pay special attention to. Whenever you eat some type of food, your body is going to expand calories in the process of digestion. How many calories it expends is directly related to the type of food you are eating. If you eat 100 calories worth of carbohydrates, you are likely going to expend about 10 calories digesting that for a net total of 90 calories. If you eat 100 calories of fat, your body can almost directly process these to bodily fat and will likely net about 97 calories in total, therefore only burning 3 off in the process of digestion. Protein on the other hand, eat 100 calories of protein rich food and you will burn between 25 and 30 calories just digesting it! This means a net of 70-75 calories thus helping you bring your total daily calorie intake lower meaning a greater belly fat loss for you.
Obviously this doesn’t mean you should go eating a diet that is 100% protein as you do need the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients you get from carbohydrates and proteins but consuming a diet that is higher than the typical 10-15% protein that is recommended may be in your favour. Be sure if you do plan on doing this that you also are drinking slightly more water, as protein in general tends to be dehydrating in nature.
The final advantage to a higher protein diet is that when you are eating a lower total calorie intake, you risk muscle mass loss. By keeping the protein content high however, you can really help to offset this. In fact, if you bump your protein up to about 1.5 grams per pound of body mass, you can almost complete nullify any muscle loss from occurring. This means any weight you do lose will be strictly from fat (and likely some muscle glycogen -the storage form of carbohydrates in the muscle tissue), which is what you are looking for.
So if belly fat loss is on the top of your list of health and fitness goals, think about giving a higher protein diet a try. They are not as unsafe as many people assume them to be so long as you are taking a good multi-vitamin and are making sure to get in plenty of vegetables and moderate amounts of fruits for disease protection.
